What is the WhatsApp Business API?

Short answer

The WhatsApp Business API is Meta's official connection that lets businesses send and receive WhatsApp messages automatically. Unlike the WhatsApp Business App, the API doesn't run on a phone but in the cloud: you connect it to software such as a flow builder, an inbox, or a CRM. You need a Meta Business account, a verified business profile, and a phone number of your own. Meta charges per delivered message; the platform you build with charges its own subscription.

What you use it for

The API is meant for companies doing more than answering by hand: automatic order updates, appointment reminders, menus, integrations with a store or CRM, and several team members on one number.

  • Send messages automatically based on events in your systems
  • Several team members on the same WhatsApp number
  • Interactive buttons, list messages, and carousels
  • Integrations with your store, CRM, calendar, and accounting

What you need

  • A Meta Business account (formerly Facebook Business Manager)
  • Business verification: company registration details and usually a supporting document
  • A phone number that isn't in use in the WhatsApp Business App
  • A platform, or your own implementation, that talks to the API
  • For messages you initiate: approved message templates

What it costs

There are two cost components: Meta charges per delivered message in the marketing, utility, and authentication categories, and your platform charges a subscription. With Easy Flow Builder that's €50 per month, all in. Service conversations the customer starts are free within the 24-hour window. The full explanation is in what the WhatsApp Business API costs.

Rules to watch out for

Meta applies a number of hard rules. Break them and you risk a lower quality rating or a block on your number.

  • Opt-in is required before you message anyone
  • Outside the 24-hour window you may only send approved templates
  • Marketing requires explicit, separate consent
  • Customers need to be able to opt out easily
Easy Flow Builder is a visual flow builder for the official WhatsApp Business API, built in Europe. €50 per month, unlimited flows and messages, no per-user fees. See pricing or create a free account.

Frequently asked questions

Is the WhatsApp Business API free?

The API itself has no fixed license fee, but Meta charges per delivered message in the marketing, utility, and authentication categories. On top of that you pay for the platform you build with; with Easy Flow Builder that's €50 per month.

Can I use the API without a platform?

Technically yes, with your own development work against Meta's Cloud API. In practice, companies pick a platform, because otherwise you're building webhooks, template management, and error handling yourself.

Can I use my current WhatsApp number?

Only if the number is no longer in use in the WhatsApp Business App or in regular WhatsApp. You can migrate a number, but you lose the conversation history from that device.

How long does setup take?

The technical setup takes an hour. The lead time is down to Meta's business verification; count on a few days, sometimes longer if they ask for documents.
