The WhatsApp Business App is a free app that runs on one phone, meant for small businesses answering by hand. The WhatsApp Business API is a cloud connection with no app: built for automation, several team members on one number, and integrations with your own systems. Automated flows, menus, and API integrations are only possible through the API. One phone number can't be active in both at once.

When the app is enough
If you work alone, answer a handful of messages a day, and don't need integrations, the free app is fine. Quick replies and labels already give you some of the convenience.
When you need the API
- Several team members need to work on the same number
- You want messages sent automatically based on events
- You want to use menus, buttons, or carousels in flows
- You want to connect your store, CRM, or calendar
- You're sending more messages than you can keep up with by hand
Switching from the app to the API
Remove the number from the WhatsApp Business App first, or Meta can't register it for the API. The conversation history on that device is lost, so export whatever you want to keep. After that, follow the step-by-step guide to applying for the API.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use one number in both?
No. A phone number can either be in the WhatsApp Business App or registered for the API. If you want to switch, remove the number from the app first.
Is my conversation history kept when I switch?
No. Moving a number to the API means losing the history from that device. Export any conversations that matter beforehand.
Is the API more expensive than the app?
Yes: the app is free, while with the API you pay per message plus a platform subscription. With Easy Flow Builder that's €50 per month — the return is in time saved and in the fact that a whole team can work from one number.
Can I already automate with the free app?
Limited: an away message, a greeting message, and quick replies. Real flows with choices and integrations are only possible through the API.
